"Thank
you for checking in with me on the progress of 'Tropical Foliage'.
I have resumed working on it since returning from a wonderful trip to
California.

"TROPICAL
FOLIAGE"
This is a
"working title" as the painting itself often suggests the title
during its development. The image is one I observed and photographed a few
years ago on a trip to Bermuda. I loved the abstractions of the
composition, the broad shapes against the calligraphic ones and the drama
it evokes.

Stage
1 - Working on tracing paper, the drawing is established and
fleshed out into a full scale value study which will be my guide
as the painting is developed.
Paper size:
29½" x 41" |

Stage
2 - With the paper fully wet, I brush in a warm and a cool color,
manipulating the flow into general areas of light and shadow,
allowing them to blends with soft edges - the painting needs to
dry completely or "cure" before continuing. |

 |
Stage 3 - This stage is actually where I begin building the image on
top of the underpainting as I had begun in Stage 2. This
installment is just a continuation of that. Notice that I
begin with images at the back of my picture plane and work toward
the front. |

 |
In
this stage I have continued to fill in the details of the
background, building up the negative areas. As the image fills
out, I must admit that I miss the abstraction of the earlier
stages. |
